THE THERMAL Treatment SIG has been established for over 10 years. It examines all thermal treatment technologies including traditional methods along with the so-called “new” and “advanced” technologies of pyrolysis and gasification. The membership currently includes those from the private sector, academia, local authorities, consultants and representatives from abroad, bringing with them their individual knowledge and expertise.

Past outcomes include:
• publication of a good practice guide on all aspects of energy from waste, which received an ISWA award for best technical publication of the year
• assisted with a study tour to the Netherlands visiting thermal treatment facilities
• organised a number of events, including “Satisfying Diversion Targets” and “Proven Technologies from Europe”
• Responded to key government consultations

Future outcomes include:
• continue to present a balanced view of thermal treatment and its place in a UK integrated waste management strategy
• continue to inform the industry by developing workshop and seminar programmes
• raise the awareness and knowledge of thermal treatments within government, professional bodies and devolved administrations
• informed response to consultation documents.
