The Greater London Assembly recently held a conference to identify barriers to the use of new and emerging technologies in London. The event informed those present of the range of commercially available treatment methods for residual waste management. WRAP SURVEY OF GLASS CONTRACTS
A survey undertaken for WRAP on glass recycling has identified large variations in contractual practices and identified only 40% of respondents having formal contacts for glass. The results show that those with a formal contract have reported higher glass recycling rates.

DEFRA SCIENCE AND INNOVATION STRATEGY
DEFRA has released a strategy that sets out the science activities the department proposes to carry out during the period 2003 to 2006. The strategy, previously reported in its draft stage is now finalised and highlights the development and implementation of the waste strategy, updating of the waste management licensing system, the promotion of resource productivity in the UK economy and improving local environments. EUROPEAN COMMISSION PROPOSE DIRECTIVE FOR MINING WASTES
The European Commission has presented a proposal for a Directive to regulate the management of waste from the extractive industries (mining and quarrying). The proposals seek to list conditions to be attached to operating permits to ensure environmental protection and also place an obligation for operators to provide financial security to ensure sites are left in a satisfactory state after closure.

HSE CONSULT ON TRANSPORT OF DANGEROUS GOODS
The Health and Safety Executive have issued a consultation that aims to consolidate a number of regulations that currently relate to the transport of dangerous goods. The consultation stated that the general principles concerning the classification, packaging, labeling and carriage of dangerous goods are unaltered. See www.hse.gov.uk/consult/condocs/cd188.pdf
SPECIFICATION FOR COMPOSTED MATERIALS

The Environmental Services Association are holding a one-day conference to discuss the EU Animal by-products regulations on the 26th June in London.
