INCLUSION OF ANAEROBIC DIGESTION AS COMPOSTING FOR BEST VALUE PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

DEFRA has confirmed that Anaerobic Digestion (AD) should be treated as a contributor to both composting and energy recovery and has issued a consultation paper. The purpose of the paper is to seek views on the options for bringing AD into the composting category of best value and for determining the method for allocating the proportions of treated waste that count towards composting and energy recovery.

Ireland's national awareness and communications campaign, "The race against waste" has hit the headlines as a TV advert has been issued with a 9m restriction due to the "shocking imagery" used. The campaign features various people being swept away by a tidal wave of waste. See www.environ.ie/DOEI/DOEIPub.nsf/6fb57b90102ce64c80256d12003a7a0d/3e408f412e32193880256dc000336ad8?OpenDocument

WRAP STUDY INTO PAPER COLLECTION SYSTEMS AND QUALITY STANDARDS

WRAP has produced an information leaflet to aid those involved in the collection/recycling of paper following research from over 80 schemes throughout the UK. Samples of the paper collected were then compared to the paper quality standard BS EN 643. The study noted the lack of awareness of paper quality issues resulting in a loss of potential income by sorting mixed loads.
