OPTIONS FOR RECYCLING LANDFILL TAX REVENUE
A report undertaken by HM Treasury has been released, discussing a variety of options available for recycling revenue from the increases in the landfill tax back to businesses, to assist them in reducing the amounts of waste they produce and send to landfill. The report examines 11 potential mechanisms for returning the tax, including interest free loans for investment in sustainable waste management, support for research and development, tax credits for expenditure on sustainable waste management, rebates, tradable permits and incentive schemes. NETWORK OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROSECUTERS FOR SCOTLAND
Scotland is to establish a national network of specialist environmental prosecutors bringing together the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and SEPA. A number of specialist prosecutors will be spread throughout 11 regions of Scotland and will act as a source of knowledge and expertise for other prosecutors dealing with environmental crimes. WASTE OPTIONS MODELLING REPORT FOR LONDON
The Greater London Authority has developed a series of waste scenarios for the management of key waste streams up to 2020. London currently has the capacity to manage around 10 million tonnes of waste per year. Over 17 million tonnes of wastes are currently generated in London, this is predicted to rise to nearly 26 million tonnes while landfill capacity within London will continue to fall.

DEFRA TO EXAMINE ISSUING OF PRN'S
At the request of the Environment Minister, Elliott Morley, DEFRA are to launch an investigation into allegations of inappropriate issuing of Packaging Waste Recovery Notes (PRNs) and Packaging Waste Export Recovery Notes. LONDON &SC NGG SITE VISIT TO F.M. CONWAY LTD, 20TH FEBRUARY 2004
F.M. Conway who are on a 14 acre site in Dartford, Kent where they recycle approximately 90% of all highway excavated and waste materials. A revolutionary gully waste recycling plant is also being installed. The morning visit (10.15 to 1.00) will involve a presentation for an hour and then a site tour. Maximum number of people is 20. STRUCTURED STAKEHOLDER AND EXPERT CONSULTATION FOR THE THEMATIC STRATEGY ON THE PREVENTION AND RECYCLING OF WASTE
Following on from the consultation on the Communication Towards the Thematic Strategy on the Prevention and Recycling of Waste, a series of meetings for stakeholders have been set up to give feedback on the results of the Internet consultation process; explain how the extended impact assessment for the strategy will work and set out the further elements of consultation in the run up to the production to the Thematic Strategy. THE CHALLENGES OF PREVENTING FLY TIPPING FACED BY THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
BRE, CIWM, Environment Agency and Rethinking Construction are holding a free national seminar on 30th March 2004 on the challenges of fly tipping and tracking hazardous waste faced by the construction and waste industry. The event will focus on the cost, enforcement and possible solutions to reduce fly tipping. The event brings together key players in the industry - manufacturers, clients and providers of new technology.
