LATEST CONSULTATION ON END OF LIFE VEHICLES DIRECTIVE

This latest consultation paper seeks views to bring into effect the remaining provisions of the EU End of Life Vehicles (ELV) Directive. These relate to "free take back" of ELVs from 1st January 2007, and to recovery and recycling targets, which the UK needs to achieve by 2006 and 2015. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA AVAILABLE FOR £32M NEW TECHNOLOGIES FUNDING

As a part of DEFRA's Waste Implementation Programme, two funding programmes are being launched to encourage the take up of new technologies in the treatment of biodegradable municipal solid waste. The Technology Research & Innovation Fund (TRIF) will allocate around £2m to address the current lack of funding for R&D projects and the Demonstrator Programme will provide around £30m to help establish new waste treatment technologies that require pilot plants to demonstrate their viability. GUIDANCE ON SCOTTISH STRATEGIC WASTE FUND

The Strategic Waste Fund (SWF) is a specific grant scheme established by the Scottish Executive for the implementation of the National Waste Strategy: Scotland. The Executive has made provision for specific funds, within the scheme, to assist local authorities in the implementation of Area Waste Plans (AWPs). This guidance relates to applications to the fund in relation to planned expenditure up until the year 2020. Applications can be made by individual authorities, or by two or more authorities in a joint bid. ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE INDICATORS FOR SCOTTISH COUNCILS

Audit Scotland has produced a pamphlet covering information on seven indicators relating to councils' management of environmental and regulatory services. Two waste related indicators are addressed: The methods of disposal of household, commercial and industrial waste and the proportion that was recycled; and cost of refuse collection and disposal.

ARBITRATORS NEEDED
 
From time to time the Institution is asked to provide an Arbitrator to settle contractual disputes between the parties to a contract. Due to an increase in the amount of such work we currently need a number of others, preferably members of the Institution, with practical experience of managing waste contracts, to take on an occasional arbitration case.
