GUIDANCE ON SAMPLING AND TESTING OF WASTES

The Environment Agency has issued a consultation providing guidance on sampling and testing of wastes to meet the landfill Directive Waste Acceptance Procedures. The Guidance outlines the responsibilities of waste testing, provides background on the technical aspects of waste characterisation and provides guidance on compliance for waste acceptance to landfill. Responses to the consultation paper are due by 9 April 2004.

COMMISSION 2003 ENVIRONMENT POLICY REVIEW

THE END-OF-LIFE VEHICLES (STORAGE AND TREATMENT) (SCOTLAND) REGULATIONS

The End-of-Life Vehicles (Storage and Treatment) (Scotland) Regulations 2003 require sites previously operating under a paragraph 45 Exemption from Waste Management Licensing to apply for a site licence by 1st  February 2004. SAFER SPECIAL WASTE WORKSHOP

The CIWM will be holding a workshop in Glasgow on the 30th January to discuss the implications of the proposed amendments to the Scottish Special waste regime. The event will discuss the proposed amendments and look at their implications for waste producers, the waste industry and local authorities. There will also be the opportunity to discuss issues directly with representatives of SEPA and the Scottish Executive. The event will also look at implications of cross border movement of hazardous waste, where different legislation is likely to apply. For more details contact events@ciwm.co.uk 

PEEL PEOPLE'S CUP - LANDFILL AWARD 2004

This prestigious award is available for competition each year and is presented to the landfill site operating team, which is judged to be the best in each year. The criteria for judging is based on:  how the site is supervised; operational features; the way the operating team works; staff welfare; safety; information techniques; local acceptability; environmental impact and aesthetics; plant maintenance and general impression.

THE JAMES SUMNER AWARD 2004

The James Sumner Award consists of a bursary of up to £1000, is available to finance the expenses of a Graduate Member or Student Member of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, who was under 30 years of age on the 1st January 2004, to enable them to attend a major international conference connected with wastes management or closely related topics. JC DAWES BURSARY 2004

The JC Dawes Award, which consists of a bursary of up to £2000, is available to finance the travelling and subsistence of a Member or Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, to enable them to embark on a programme of research or study in a wastes management or closely related topic, in a country other than the one in which they reside or work.  Entrants must be 30 years of age or over on 1st January 2004,
