PLASTIC BOTTLE COLLECTION UP BY 50%

A UK plastic bottle recycling survey undertaken for WRAP has indicated a 50% increase in plastic bottle collections over the last 2 years. 62% of all Local Authorities now offer collection facilities for plastic bottles and the survey predicts 30,000 tonnes of plastic bottles will be collected each year by 2006. The survey also shows performances of various collection schemes along with their associated costs.

£21 MILLION FOR RECYCLING AND COMPOSTING IN WALES

The Welsh Assembly Government is to provide an additional £21 million to Local Authorities in Wales in 2004/05 for recycling, re-use and composting schemes. Similar levels of funding have also been promised for the following 2 years, with allocation based upon spending needs derived from the standard spending assessment. ADDRESSING THE ECONOMICS OF WASTE

The OECD has produced a publication containing 8 papers examining a range economic measures used within waste management. The papers examine waste generation trends, economic analysis of waste policies, landfill and waste taxation, product design and lead and PVC wastes.

EU COMMUNICATION ON INTEGRATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS INTO EUROPEAN STANDARDISATION

BROWNFIELD DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR - 22ND APRIL

Few industries will feel the impact associated with the loss in Landfill capacity for hazardous waste greater than those involved in Brownfield development and contaminated land remediation. This CIWM one day seminar will examine the potential pit falls that will be faced by those involved in development, treatment and disposal of contaminated land and will offer advice on the new requirements for the management of contaminated land; including alternative treatment options to disposal in landfill. ET 2004

The CIWM will be co-hosting a waste information point with the ESA at this year's ET exhibition, taking place from the 30th March - 1st April at the NEC, Birmingham. A number of free seminars will take place including one on hazardous waste at the waste information point, while other seminars will take place throughout the exhibition. WASTE AWARENESS CERTIFICATE

The CIWM has launched a training initiative designed to make employees 'aware of waste'. By attending this short five-hour training course employees will be able to: understand what is waste, reduce, re-use, and recycle waste, know about disposal routes for remaining waste, deal with waste safely, know the legal responsibilities for waste, identify sources of help for those difficult waste questions.
