Chair: Mr Stuart Reynolds – Norfolk Environmental Waste Services Ltd
This Special Interest Group (SIG) was formed in 2003 on completion of the technical publication Biological Techniques in Solid Waste Management and Land Remediation. The purpose of this SIG is to enable the dissemination of information relating to the biological treatment of biodegradable wastes, including new techniques and technologies for composting, anaerobic digestion, land remediation or other processes, like MBT involving biological treatments of residual waste.
The SIG’s objectives are to:
• Investigate and report on new techniques and technologies for composting, anaerobic digestion, land remediation or other processes, like MBT involving biological treatments of residual waste.
• Ensure that members are kept up-to-date with emerging legislation - International and the UK, relating to all aspects of biological treatment storage, transportation and processing.
• Share current information on environmental matters concerning biological waste treatment currently in practice.
• Identify and formulate programmes for at least two relevant seminars/briefing sessions each year.
This SIG works in close liaison with the Composting Association, Environment Agency and other CIWM SIGs, such as the Thermal Treatment SIG. Links are established with: County Services Society; ASSURRE on resource management and bio treatment; ISWA Composting Working Group and FEAD.
Past outcomes include:
• Biological Techniques publication
• Responded to key government consultations
• A number of successful workshops including Anaerobic Digestion, MBT
• A number of joint events have been held with r3 Environmental and Reading University since 2005 covering compost-like outputs and their potential uses. A report was prepared after the March 2007 event, to view click here
Future objectives include:
• Influencing the EU Thematic Strategy on Soil Protection
• Working with Defra to ensure Animal By-Products restrictions do not impair composting or other biological treatment techniques.
• Strategic, practical and regulatory issues surrounding “biological treatment” processes such as MBT and where they fit within the revisions to the Waste Framework Directive and the Water Framework Directive
• The “definition” and interpretation into UK legislation of “end-of-waste” as this may have considerable impact on local authorities choice of technology when considering there options to achieve LATS.
