MONITORING OF PARTICULATE MATTER IN AMBIENT AIR AROUND WASTE FACILITIES
The Environment Agency has released a technical guidance document entitled, Monitoring of Particulate Matter in Ambient Air Around Waste Facilities (M17) The guidance is split into 3 sections providing guidance on factors to take into account when carrying out a monitoring programme, specific monitoring techniques available and fact sheets covering a number of different waste management facilities.

SEPA CORPORATE PLAN
SEPA has issued a corporate plan for 2004-2005 giving waste management a high priority as a means of improving water, land and air quality. SEPA will continue to work towards this outcome by encouraging waste minimisation, the reuse of waste, the adoption of best practice in the recovery of waste and ensuring compliance with licence conditions to protect the environment.

BATTERIES DIRECTIVE DEVELOPMENTS
The European Parliament has voted on the proposals to introduce a directive requiring the collection and recycling of all batteries placed on the EU market. The European Parliament raised 87 amendments to the original proposals from the European Commission who will now look at these and return a modified proposal accepting some and rejecting other amendments. CIWM ANNUAL CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION 2004

LOCAL AUTHORITIES BRIEFING SESSION
This briefing session for local authorities and others with an interest will be held on 10 May at CIWM HQ in Northampton and will include Household Waste Recycling Centres and their connection with hazardous waste and National Assessments of Civic Amenity Sites survey. A STEP CHANGE IN LANDFILL GAS
The CIWM will be holding a seminar on new developments in the management of landfill gas on the 27 May at Cranfield University. This event will examine the implications of new guidance from the UK regulators following the release of 7 consultation documents issued earlier this year. It will also use the opportunity to look at other issues and new research impacting upon landfill gas management and allow delegates with plenty of opportunity for discussing the future of landfill gas management.
