HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS FROM WASTE MANAGEMENT REPORT
Defra has issued a long awaited report on the health and environmental effects of various waste management activities. Headline findings include less than 1% of UK dioxin emissions originate from incineration and no evidence existing to show living near a landfill increases the risk of cancer. The report concludes that modern day practice for managing waste has at most a minor effect on human health and the environment, particularly when compared to everyday activities. For the full report (420 pages) and extended summary see www.defra.gov.uk/environment/waste/health-effects/index.htm To view the CIWM press release on our redeveloped web site see www.ciwm.co.uk/pm/215
