LANDFILL ALLOWANCES TRADING SCHEME CONSULTATION OUTCOME

DEFRA has released the responses received on the landfill allowances trading scheme consultation paper and lists a number of decisions taken for the operation of the trading scheme, following comments received. GUIDANCE ON RISK ASSESSMENT FOR LANDFILL

The Environment Agency has issued a consultation Guidance for Assessing Risk at Landfill Sites. The guidance covers risk assessment for landfill gas, hydrogeology, stability, dust and accidents and will assist those producing PPC permits for landfill sites.

GOVERNMENT RESPONSE TO MPs REPORT ON WEEE & ROHS IMPLEMENTATION

The Government has responded to the House of Commons Committee report into the WEEE & ROHS directives. The report contained 13 recommendations for the Government to take forward and the Government has responded to these recommendations in this report.

FUNDING FOR SCOTTISH COMMUNITY RECYCLING SCHEMES

The Scottish Executive has announced that 26 community initiatives are to receive a share of nearly £1.7 million from the Scottish Strategic waste fund.

CONSULTATION ON THE POSSIBLE AMENDMENT OF THE ANNEX TO THE ROHS DIRECTIVE
The Environment Commission has launched a stakeholder consultation on the possible amendment of the Annex of Directive 2002/95/EC on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS). Interested parties are invited to respond to the consultation paper by 5 July 2004.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT COMMITTEE'S SIXTH REPORT ON ENVIRONMENTAL CRIMES

The Environmental Audit Committee's Sixth Report of Session 2003-04 on Environmental Crimes concludes that the current situation with regard to the sentencing of environmental crimes is "profoundly unsatisfactory".  Despite recent improvements and some changes to sentencing, the report states that sentencing is too often inflexible and fines are inadequate.

SPECIAL WASTE - NEW REQUIREMENTS IN SCOTLAND FOR 2004

This Scottish Environmental Services Association seminar will examine the implications and challenges for hazardous waste management in Scotland following the implementation of the new Special Waste Regulations in Scotland in July 2004.

LAND USE PLANNING FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT

ESA is holding a conference entitled 'Land-Use Planning for Waste Management: New Framework, New Challenges.' This event will be held on Thursday, 1 July in London and covers themes such as the future for BPEO, review of Waste Strategy 2000, the relationship between municipal waste strategies and waste development frameworks, advice on how to avoid judicial review, the implications of the SEA Directive for local authorities and their partners and effective community engagement.
