GOVERNMENT PROGRESS ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
The Sustainable Development Commission has released a report assessing Government performance on meeting sustainable development indicators. Whilst welcoming the progress the Government is making in many areas and in increasing recycling rates, the overall assessment for waste is 'dreadful'. The Commission recommends that in waste the Government should accelerate its guidance to industry and local authorities about the way in which the timetables and targets for achieving higher levels of waste minimisation, recycling and reuse must be achieved, and ensure that the necessary resources and incentives are put in place to achieve this major change. HAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE & TREATMENT FACILITIES: JOINT ENFORCEMENT PROGRAMME
The Environment Agency and the Health & Safety Executive have released a joint report following an environmental and health and safety compliance inspection of 25 chemical waste facilities. These sites are likely to fall under PPC in forthcoming years and will have to show they are applying Best Available Technique. The inspections aims were to find current standards of operation and promote current best practice within the sector. The inspections have identified areas of current practice where attention may be required to ensure best practice is achieved.See www.environment-agency.gov.uk/commondata/105385/eahse_joint_report_759841.pdf
