HSE REPORT ON SAFE TRANSPORT IN WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING FACILITIES
The HSE has produced a best practice document for the waste management industry that offers advice on addressing transport risks at waste management facilities. The guidance is intended to help operators meet their legal obligations by offering clear procedures on the completion of traffic risk assessments.

SAFE RECOVERY OF PETROL FROM END-OF-LIFE VEHICLES
The HSE has also produced the following guidance for vehicle dismantlers on the safe removal, storage and disposal of petrol from ELVs. The guidance is designed to help sites assess the risks arising from handling and storing petrol and gives suggestions on how to control those risks to help comply with the ELV Regulations.

COMMENCEMENT ORDER FOR THE WASTE AND EMISSIONS TRADING ACT IN NORTHERN IRELAND

THE BENEFITS OF USING COMPOST FOR SCOTTISH CROPS
REMADE Scotland have produced a new factsheet outlining the benefits of compost for application to crops grown in Scotland. The factsheet was developed as a tool for compost producers to help them raise the awareness of farmers near their sites and hopefully stimulate demand for their products. REPORT ON CONSTAMINANTS FROM WASTES USED AS ORGANIC FERTLISERS
A study carried out on behalf of the Directorate-General for the Environment of the European Commission. The report identifies pollutants likely to be found in foodstuffs for human consumption and provides a framework for the use of waste derived composts as organic fertilisers in agriculture with the goal of ensuring the long term productivity of agricultural soils.

WEEE - IS THE UK READY? 12th OCTOBER, NOTTINGHAM
The Waste Electrical and Electronic (WEEE) directive will soon be transposed into UK Law, with the government recently publishing its final consultation on draft Regulations and guidance. The National Clearing House is the intended implementation mechanism for ensuring all WEEE that is collected, is treated and recycled according to UK and EU standards, whilst allowing for producers to meet their obligations through competitive tendering for collection, treatment and recycling services. Following the high demand for the first Hazardous Waste Seminar the CIWM recently held, a second event will held on the 22nd October in London. The event will examine the recently released Review of the Special Waste Regulations consultation paper and the implications of this for the various stakeholders involved in managing hazardous wastes. USE LESS, RECYCLE MORE ROADSHOW
A series of ten regional events for the construction and waste industries, as well as policy makers, are being run under the banner of Construction Resources: Using Less and Recycling More. The free to attend events are being organised by companies including UK
Ceed, Constructing Excellence and the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management. The events will demonstrate ready-to-use tools and plans and provide an opportunity to learn more about the new DTI Code of Practice on site waste management.
