WRAP LAUNCHES NATIONAL RECYCLING CAMPAIGN
WRAP has launched the £10 million multi-media 'Recycle Now' national recycling campaign. The Campaign will see a series of television adverts showing the endless possibilities for recycling. Consumer website also provides tips on how to recycle and guides the public to their nearest recycling services and sites.

DEFRA RESEARCH STRATEGY FOR WASTE AND RESOURCES
DEFRA has finalised their waste and resources research and development strategy for 2004/05 up to 2006/07. An annual figure of around £5 million will be made available through the Waste Implementation Programme, with the main aim to deliver a sound evidence based system for better-informed policy development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation for sustainable waste management at both the national and local levels, which incorporates an effective mechanism for access to and dissemination of research results.

SEPA THERMAL TREATMENT OF MSW GUIDANCE
SEPA has issued guidance on how they will use their regulatory powers and provide their views on the role of Thermal Treatment for Municipal Wastes within the context of the National Waste Strategy. CIPFA WASTE COLLECTION AND DISPOSAL STATISTICS
The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) has produced their annual waste collection and disposal statistics for England and Wales. In 2002/03 the total costs of local authority waste services increased by 6.7% from the previous year to £2.4 billion. NORTHERN IRELAND REFLECTIONS ON WASTE STRATEGY REVIEW
The Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland has issued a report setting out their response to the recent review of progress in achieving their waste strategy. The review, undertaken by an independent Waste Management Advisory Board, issued a series of recommendations to which the Department has commented on their progress in these areas and where they agree and disagree with the advisory board.

CHEWING GUM, FAST FOOD PACKAGING AND ATM LITTER IN IRELAND
A study conducted for the Irish government has presented a number of options to tackle litter. CODE OF PRACTICE ON ASSESSMENT AND CONTROL OF ODOUR NUISANCE FROM WASTE WATER TREATMENT FACILITIES
This Code of Practice is intended for local authorities, Scottish Water and the public, to provide a framework within which both operators and enforcement agencies can operate to minimise the impacts of odours from waste water treatment works, and identify steps to tackle odours of a significant nature.

ADVANCED WASTE MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGIES EDUCATION & TRAINING PROGRAMME
Defra is seeking to tender for the development of teaching and learning materials to support the Advanced Waste Management Technologies Education & Training Programme.
The education and training programme has been designed to encourage sustainable waste management practices in the UK through the adoption of advanced waste management technologies. The programme is aimed at those working in the waste management industry and allied professions including finance and investment, planning, civil and process engineering, etc.
The Defra contract(s) will be for the development of teaching and learning materials for an M level module in advanced waste management technologies; a level 4 Vocationally Related Qualification in advanced waste management technologies; and a level 3 Vocationally Related Qualification in the principles and practices of sustainable wastes management.

TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE USE OF ORGANIC WASTES CONFERENCE

WEEE - IS THE UK READY?

The Waste Electrical and Electronic (WEEE) directive will soon be transposed into UK Law, with the government recently publishing its final consultation on draft Regulations and guidance. The National Clearing House is the intended implementation mechanism for ensuring all WEEE that is collected, is treated and recycled according to UK and EU standards, whilst allowing for producers to meet their obligations through competitive tendering for collection, treatment and recycling services. HAZARDOUS WASTE SEMINAR

USE LESS, RECYCLE MORE ROADSHOW
A series of ten regional events for the construction and waste industries, as well as policy makers, are being run under the banner of Construction Resources: Using Less and Recycling More. The free to attend events are being organised by companies including UK Ceed, Constructing Excellence and the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management. The events will demonstrate ready-to-use tools and plans and provide an opportunity to learn more about the new DTI Code of Practice on site waste management.
