TACKLING CHEWING GUM LITTER
Research undertaken for Defra's Chewing Gum Action Group, a group including ENCAMS, chewing gum manufacturers and the CIWM has identified the behaviour and attitude of those who drop chewing gum. The research shows a number of differing attitudes held by those who drop gum and this will allow a targeted campaign at each category of gum droppers.

WASTE MINIMISATION AND RECYCLING FUND PROJECT FINDINGS
Defra has released key findings from their second round of projects funded under the second round of the waste minimisation and recycling fund. 113 of the 150 projects related to kerbside collection schemes. Data from these schemes forecasts nearly 250,000 tonnes of recyclable material will be diverted from landfill. LATS AND PUBLIC PROCUREMENT
Following feedback from the series of seminars held by Defra on the Landfill Allowances Trading Scheme (in England), the initial views of Defra have been published on public procurement rules and LATS. If allowances are traded for cash, no service or goods have been acquired and therefore public procurement rules, such as requiring a tender, will not be engaged.

BPEO FOR MANAGEMENT OF WASTE ASBESTOS
The Environment and Heritage Service for Northern Ireland has produced a report on the various options for the management of asbestos waste. The report is intended for use by Environment and Heritage Service staff in assessing asbestos treatment and disposal applications and to inform operators of the approach to asbestos management in Northern Ireland.

CONSULTATION ON CHARGING
The Environment Agency is consulting on proposals to amend charging schemes for Waste Management Licensing, Transfrontier Shipment, Pollution Prevention and Control, Radioactive Substances and Integrated Pollution Control. Most of the existing charges are proposed to be increased by 2.5%.

£8 MILLION TO STIMULATE INNOVATIVE PACKAGING
Defra has announced that an £8 million fund will be available for research and development into designing, prototyping and piloting innovative products and packaging materials and systems. The fund aims to household waste reduce waste originating from supermarkets and convenience stores by 310,000 tonnes by March 2006.

SHREDDER WASTE DEADLINE EXTENSION
The Environment Agency has announced that they have extended the end date for interim criteria for assessing whether waste from the shredding of ELV's is hazardous or not. The deadline has been extended to the 30th November 2004

WASTE DATA STRATEGY SEMINAR
The CIWM will be holding a one day seminar on Waste data and the new waste data strategy that will involve every business in the sector. Regulatory data returns and obligations will be the mainstay of the strategy, possibly needing clear data standards, reporting formats and obligations and IT systems to make it all happen. USE LESS, RECYCLE MORE ROADSHOW
A series of ten regional events for the construction and waste industries, as well as policy makers, are being run under the banner of Construction Resources: Using Less and Recycling More. The free to attend events are being organised by companies including UK Ceed, Constructing Excellence and the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management. The events will demonstrate ready-to-use tools and plans and provide an opportunity to learn more about the new DTI Code of Practice on site waste management.
