MONITORING AND EVALUATION OF RECYCLING COMMUNICATIONS

WRAP has issued a toolkit intended to help local authorities benefit from a structured monitoring and evaluation methodology for recycling campaigns. The toolkit describes minimum requirements that must be undertaken by a local authority receiving funding from WRAP for communication programmes. The toolkit can also be used by authorities for evaluating communication programmes not funded through WRAP.

CIWM PUBLICATIONS

Members should shortly be receiving the CIWM's newest publication: Kerbside collection of recyclables and compostable waste with their November Wastes Management journal. The report compiled by members offers advice and guidance on legislation, design, operation, communication, transport, partnerships, education, training and safety issues. The CIWM Energy from Waste: A good practice guide was recently awarded the International Solid Waste Association publication award for 2004. CORPORATE ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE

The Environment Agency has published a study into the influence of environmental governance and how this impacts upon financial performance of a company. The report concludes that in 85% of the studies assessed, a positive correlation between environmental governance and/or events, and financial performance was found.

FUNDING AWARDED FOR 10 LOCAL AUTHORITIES

Defra has announced that 10 local authorities have been awarded £8 million to implement a range of sustainable waste management projects. The 10 authorities had been classed as a 'near misses' in the final round of the National Waste Minimisation and Recycling fund.

Corporate members of the Institution are reminded that nominations in writing for the next Junior Vice-President of the Institution should be received at Headquarters by noon on 31st December 2004. WASTE DATA STRATEGY SEMINAR

The CIWM will be holding a one day seminar on Waste data and the new waste data strategy that will involve every business in the sector.  Regulatory data returns and obligations will be the mainstay of the strategy, possibly needing clear data standards, reporting formats and obligations and IT systems to make it all happen. USE LESS, RECYCLE MORE ROADSHOW

A series of ten regional events for the construction and waste industries, as well as policy makers, are being run under the banner of Construction Resources: Using Less and Recycling More. The free to attend events are being organised by companies including UK Ceed, Constructing Excellence and the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management. The events will demonstrate ready-to-use tools and plans and provide an opportunity to learn more about the new DTI Code of Practice on site waste management. Remaining events will be taking place on the following dates and venues: 18th November (Mountjoy Research Centre, University of Durham), 30th November (University of Edinburgh).

30th November - 2nd December - An Introduction to the Management of Wastes
Aimed at those new to the waste management industry or those who have recently acquired the responsibility for managing waste within their organisation, this course provides an introduction to sustainable wastes management within the UK.
