ASSESSING DIVERSION OF BMW FROM MBT
The Environment Agency published a consultation on monitoring the diversion of biodegradable municipal waste from landfill. The consultation asks a number of key questions on how best to monitor pre-treatment prior to landfill, from processes such as MBT. In conjunction with the Consultation, the Agency is also hosting a free workshop in Birmingham on 10th December to discuss monitoring MBT and pre-treatment plants.

BUSINESS RESOURCE EFFICIENCY PROGRAMME
Defra has released details of a £284 million programme for England; The Business Resource Efficiency (BREW) Programme. The funding aims to return revenue generated from the landfill tax into increased support for businesses to minimise waste, reduce waste sent to landfill and to improve resource efficiency.

REQUIREMENTS FOR WASTE DESTINED FOR LANDFILL
The Environment Agency has issued a guide for waste producers and managers on the requirements for waste destined for disposal in landfill. The guidance is essentially a summary of the requirements of the landfill regulations.

ENVIRONMENT AGENCY FUNDING FOR FLY-TIPPING
The Environment Agency had been allocated £2 million from revenue raised by landfill tax. This money will provide targeted information to help businesses keep within the law when disposing of their waste, and understand the implications if they don't - under the legal Duty of Care and for targeting hotspots for cheap un-registered waste carriers who are undermining legitimate trade and are likely to be involved in fly-tipping and illegal activity.

QUEEN'S SPEECH
This weeks Queen's speech, outlining the governments legislative agenda for the next 12 months, included the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Bill. This is likely to see Local Authorities given increased powers to tackle fly-tipping, litter, abandoned vehicles and other anti-social behaviour.
