LANDFILL REGULATIONS 2005

Defra has issued a consultation on proposed Landfill Regulations (England and Wales) 2005. The consultation aims to bring into force the remaining requirements of the landfill Directive and in particular full Waste Acceptance Criteria. The consultation also states that the 30th of October 2007 should be the date all waste destined for landfill should be pre-treated and the date that liquid wastes will be banned from landfill among other measures.

LANDFILL GAS GUIDANCE

The Environment Agency has issued 2 further guidance documents previously available as consultation documents. The guidance are for monitoring of enclosed landfill gas flares and on gas treatment technologies for landfill gas engines. The documents should be available shortly on the Agency website at

ELV GUIDANCE

Defra has issued further guidance on the End of Life Vehicles Directive. The guidance provides details of depollution procedures for ELV's over 3.5 tonnes in weight.

3.5 MILLION FOR REPUBLIC OF IRELAND LOCAL AUTHORITIES

Local Authorities in the Republic of Ireland are to be given 3.5 million raised through the plastic bag levy. The money will go towards offsetting operational costs associated with bring banks and civic amenity facilities.

JULY 2005 - COMING TO A LANDFILL SITE (NOT) NEAR YOU SOON - Hazardous Waste and Waste Acceptance Criteria seminar - Cardiff - 26th January 2005

The CIWM is holding a 1 day seminar which will hear feedback from the recent Hazardous Waste Regulations consultation and what requirements future Hazardous waste legislation and Waste Acceptance Criteria will  have upon waste producers, Waste Management operators, and Local Authorities. The event to be held in Cardiff will also hear a key note speech from Carwyn Jones, Welsh Assembly Minister for Environment, Planning and Countryside on the strategy for dealing with hazardous waste within Wales.

CIWM WORKSHOP MBT: WHAT TO DO WITH THE OUTPUT?
20th JANUARY 2005 - PETERBOROUGH MOATHOUSE

Following the high demand for the first MBT workshop last month, a repeat event will take place on the 20th January in Peterborough.

The workshop will seek to take the MBT discussion forward, focusing on the range of options for the utilisation of MBT outputs, including its use as an alternative fuel, soil conditioner, and its potential contribution to an integrated waste management strategy. The workshop will discuss these options in the context of Local Authority diversion and recycling targets. The event will bring together key experts from the waste management sector to discuss each option in turn.

WESSEX NEW GENERATION GROUP - WASTE LAW SEMINAR
25h January 2005, at the Create Centre, Bristol, In Lecture Theatre, 1pm.

The meeting will focus on the WEEE directive, outlining the main requirements and how the Government is proposing to implement the directive and the possible role for the Agency
