CIWM WASTE STRATEGY REVIEW POSITION PAPER
The CIWM has issued a position paper in advance of the review of the Waste Strategy 2000, examining progress on the strategy and lessons that have been learned from devolved administration strategies. 7 key issues are highlighted in the paper and a series of specific actions to deliver on these issues are detailed within the position statement.

MUNICIPAL WASTE STATISTICS FOR ENGLAND
Defra has released provisional estimates of its annual Municipal Waste Bulletin for 2003-04. The statistics show a decrease of 1% in the amount of waste collected by Local Authorities with the tonnage being sent to landfill also down to 20.9 million tonnes. The levels of recycling have risen from 14.5% in 2002/03 to 17.7& in 2003/04.

£5 MILLION SCOTTISH COMMUNITY RECYCLING FUND
The Scottish Executive has announced a £5 million fund for community sector recycling groups. The INCREASE programme will run over 2 years for community sector waste initiatives.

WASTE RECYCLING PAYMENTS REVISIONS
Revisions have been made to the Waste Recycling payments Waste Disposal Authorities make to Waste Collection Authorities where waste is diverted from landfill for recycling. The changes take into account the retail price index and the increase in landfill tax to £18 per tonne.

The Collection, Recycling and Environmental Cleansing Special Interest Group are holding a briefing session on 22 March 2005 on health and safety. The session will cover aspects of drug related litter and how to handle this material safely, what the HSE are looking for from the waste management industry and management systems in place for recycling, disposal and treatment. The event will also include the handling of hazardous wastes at HWRCs safely and learning lessons from a fatality.
