Giant Recycling Puppet Makes Frst Public Appearance at CIWM Show - June 05

‘Willy Waste Not’, the giant recycling puppet, will be making his national debut at the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management’s (CIWM) Exhibition on Wednesday 15 June.

Willy is three metres high with a funnel-shaped head in which suitable waste is placed, which he then occasionally and cheekily deposits as a beautiful recycled item.
Nothing that goes into Willy’s body is wasted, and everything is turned into something functional and sustainable.

Willy was commissioned by Waste Neutral, a flagship programme within the Eden Project, as part of its public awareness programme, designed to catch attention in public places and carry a positive message about waste as a resource. The Eden Project is well known for the way it delivers educational messages through performance and entertainment as well as exhibits and activities.

Willy will be displaying his considerable skills and interacting with the public on 15 June at the following times:

10.00am   Front of Torbay Park

12.00pm   External exhibition area at Preston Green

2.00pm   Front of Torbay Park

CIWM communications manager Catherine Park comments: ‘Managing waste effectively will play a key part in protecting the planet for us and future generations, and recycling is a vital element in this equation. This is a really entertaining and striking way of getting the recycling message across.’

Alison Vaughan, Waste Neutral Programme Manager, comments: ‘Although this is all a bit of fun, it has a serious message behind it because it shows what can be recycled and what this can be turned into for people to buy. Recycled goods don’t have to be second best and many are desirable objects in their own right. And the more recycled products we buy, the better and more available these products will become.’
