Industry achievers were recognised at the CIWM Annual Awards ceremony on 14 June in Paignton. The prestigious awards were presented at the CIWM Industry Dinner in the Imperial Hotel by newly-elected president Mike Philpott and immediate past president Alistair Lamont.The President’s Award – This is the personal gift of the president at the end of their year of office in recognition of the support and service given to the Institution and the industry by an individual. Immediate past-president, Alistair Lamont, made his presentation to N C Vasuki, president of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA).
Lamont commended him for his ‘incisive understanding of the whole business of waste management, as well as a highly developed understanding of the psychology and sociology of humans behaviour. He is able to impart that knowledge to others in an interesting and thought-provoking manner and is unselfishly generous with his time and energy.’
James Sumner Award 2005 – Sarah Evans, education officer with the London Borough of Bexley, was presented with this award that recognises younger members of the profession and provides a bursary to enable a graduate or student member of the Institution to attend a major international conference. Sarah plans to attend ISWA’s conference this November in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
JC Dawes Bursary 2005 - Paul Williams, facilities advisor for the Birmingham Heartlands and Solihull NHS Trust, was presented with this award to enable him to carry out a piece of research overseas. Paul will undertake a comparative study of healthcare wastes segregation and management in Canada, Finland and the UK.
CIWM Waste Regulation Award 2004 - This award is given to the author(s) of the best paper on a waste regulation, or associated topic, presented under the auspices of the Institution. Michael Bland, Professor Sue Grimes and Lina Mehta, all of the Centre for Environmental Research at Brunel University, won with their paper entitled An Investigation of Compliance with the Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations 1991.
The Peel People’s Cup - Teamwork plays a big part in this industry, and the Packington Estate Enterprises Limited (PEEL) People’s Cup was introduced to recognise and reward the importance of this quality. It is presented to the best operating team on a landfill site, which this year was identified as the team at Shelford Landfill Site near Canterbury, Kent, referred to by the judges as ‘an operational showcase, with many outstanding design, infrastructure and innovative features.’ The prizes were received by site manager Vinod Mehroke.
The James Jackson Award - Presented in memory of an Institution founder, this award is for the best paper presented at an Institution meeting during the last year. The winners for 2004 are Robert Lisney, Keith Riley and Professor Charles Banks for their paper, From Waste to Resource Management – A Discussion Paper, which was presented at the 2004 annual conference.
