PROCUREMENT GOOD PRACTICE GUIDE

WRAP has released new guidance on best practice in sustainable procurement. Developed in conjunction with the Local Government Association (LGA) and the Centre for Public Scrutiny (CfPS), the guidance is targeted at councillors in England with a particular interest in scrutiny, sustainability or procurement. Providing advice on how councillors can shape procurement strategy to deliver on sustainability at no extra cost, the guide offers practical examples of how to improve resource efficiency by specifying higher recycled content in goods, works and services.

UK ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION EXPENDITURE BY UK INDUSTRY

DEFRA has published a research report on environmental protection expenditure by UK industry. The report's findings show that gross spending on environmental protection in 2003 by UK industry amounted to an estimated £3.4 billion, of which 40% was spent on solid waste.

WASTE ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA - ENVIRONMENT AGENCY ADVICE

The Environment Agency has published advice for anyone who wants to dispose of hazardous waste at a landfill site after 16th July.  In exceptional circumstances, where WAC will not be met in time, the guidance sets out additional strict criteria that producers and landfill operators will need to satisfy before the waste is landfilled, until alternative methods of disposal or treatment are put in place.

NEW BID TO MAKE UN-ADMINISTERED TREATY ON HAZARDOUS WASTES MORE EFFECTIVE

The United Nations will be looking to strengthen the Basel Convention's effectiveness at reducing the risks of hazardous waste. In particular, guidance will be established on wastes containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as dioxins, furans, and DDT and other pesticides.

WRAP FUNDING FOR COMPOSTING PROJECTS

WRAP has issued £700,000 to help build new composting plants which will process an additional 220,000 tonnes of garden and kitchen waste.

ONE PLANET OLYMPICS

The London 2012 vision for the Olympic Games 2012 embodies the concept of a "One Planet Olympics", which complements the Olympic ideal of "sport and the harmonious development of mankind" and the notion of fair play in sport. London's successful bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games was a bid for the most sustainable Games ever and as such, included a proposal to avoid landfill by reducing waste at source, then reusing, recycling and recovering all remaining waste.

RESEARCH LAUNCH

Survey of the arisings and the use of construction, demolition and excavation waste in Wales in 2003. DEFRA - NEW TECHNOLOGIES PROGRAMME 2004/5 PUBLICATIONS

Defra have now released a CD containing the publications produced for the new technologies programme. The publications included are: a guide to options for BMW diversion from landfill, technology briefs, case studies, climate change and articles written during the programme.

CONSULTATION: ENVIRONMENTAL REPORTING GUIDELINES - KPIs

DEFRA has issued a consultation on how businesses can use Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to manage and report their environmental performance. It also sets out which environmental impacts (i.e. which KPIs) are most significant for which business sectors. For 79% of UK business there are 5 or less significant KPIs, against which the Government believes they should report their environmental performance. The deadline for responses is 16th September 2006.

CIWM will be holding an informal brainstorming session at our offices in Northampton to gain members' comments regarding the consultation paper on proposals for transposing the treatment permitting requirements of the WEEE Directive. BILINGUAL WASTE AWARENESS WALES EVENTS RECYCLING GUIDE

This new Guide aims to help events organisers establish recycling as a pre-requisite to waste management at their event; no matter what type of event it may be.
The Guide suggests simple and cost effective ways that events organisers can implement recycling.
