DEFRA FIGURES SHOW DOUBLING IN HOUSEHOLD WASTE RECYCLING OVER 4 YEARS

Defra has released figures indicating that the recycling of household waste has doubled in the last four years. Regional variations show people in the North East recycle the least (16%), whilst residents in the East of England recycle the most (29%).

REPORT ON SINGLE WASTE AUTHORITY FOR LONDON

This study proposes that London has a single waste authority and that the Mayor becomes responsible for waste planning in London. In the Mayor's proposal; the London Single Waste Authority would have responsibility for the management of London's municipal waste, replacing the existing 16 waste disposal authorities in London and would take direct responsibility for the delivery of the Mayor's Municipal Waste Management Strategy.

EUROPEAN OUTLOOK REPORT 2005

The European outlook report 2005 assesses the consequences of key socio-economic developments in Europe. The report highlights, amongst other things, key considerations in relation to decoupling waste growth from GDP in EU member states. Construction and Industrial waste streams are expected to continue to be the most significant contributors to waste growth in the EU-15, with about 650 million tonnes per year by 2020. Municipal waste is expected to contribute 250 million tonnes per year.

ACHIEVING IMPROVEMENTS IN STREET CLEANSING AND RELATED SERVICES

Defra has produced a report in support of its three year Gershon Efficiency Review initiative to improve standards in street cleansing and related services. The report examines how both the efficiency and quality of street cleansing, waste management and street scene services can be monitored and improved. It addresses the challenges associated with cleansing and local environmental quality, and offers strategies and solutions to overcome them.

TOOLKIT ON GLASS RECYCLING FOR LICENSED PREMISES

WRAP has launched a toolkit providing guidance on how to successfully establish collections from licensed retail premises. The toolkit is aimed primarily at existing providers of recycling or trade waste services such as waste management companies and local authorities. However, entrepreneurs, community groups and other companies looking to establish a glass recycling collection service will find the toolkit equally beneficial. CIWM CYMRU WALES GOLF DAY

The first CIWM Cymru Wales Golf Day Event will take place on 28th September, from 12.00 at the "Parc Golf Club", Coedkernew, Newport, SE Wales.  The day will consist of a Stableford in teams of four (best two scores per hole). Arrival from 12.00 mid day for bacon rolls and tea/coffee with play commencing from 1pm to 2.30pm.  The golf will be followed by a three course evening dinner at 7.15pm and presentation of prizes to follow.  The usual standard club rules will apply and we will request that members and guests meet these requirements. (All players must have a handicap).

NORTH WEST NEW GENERATION GROUP SITE VISIT

There will be a Site Visit to Preston Recycling Ltd, Ribbleton, Preston on Thursday 29th September 2005. The visit will comprise a demonstration of acceptance and booking process for End of Life vehicles, the vehicle de-pollution process, ELV processing requirements & guidelines and observation of de-polluted shells during the final crushing and baling process. The deadline for applying for registration as a Chartered Environmentalist under the grand-parenting scheme is rapidly approaching. Completed applications for Registration must be received at CIWM Headquarters by noon on Thursday 22 September 2005.  After that date a full application will be required, and this will involve a full professional review including an interview. The Collection, Recycling and Environmental Cleansing Special Interest Group are holding a briefing session on 14 November 2005 on health and safety. The session will cover a summary of the HSE's work programme for the waste management industry and management systems in place in anticipation of a HSE inspection. Street Scene is an important aspect of the new Cleaner Safer Greener agenda and so health and safety for drug related litter will be a key issue. Collection and recycling health and safety and what lessons can be learnt from a fatality, to prevent further incidents will also be discussed.

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management together with the University of Sheffield is inviting contributions to the 5th Annual Symposium on Waste Treatment Technologies which will run alongside CIWM 2006.
