REVISION TO WM2

The UK regulatory Agencies have issued a revised version of their guidance WM2; Interpretation of the definition and classification of hazardous waste (second edition). As the title suggests the guidance should be used to determine if a waste is hazardous (or Special if in Scotland) and the revised version of the guidance along with a summary of changes made from the first edition can be found at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/444217/590750/590821/502174/496498/ The guidance is also available on SEPA’s and EHSNI web sites.

SCOTTISH RECYCLING RATES INCREASE

SEPA have announced the latest quarterly municipal waste statistics for the period of April ~ June 2005. The figures indicate that Scotland is now recycling and composting 23.9 percent of its MSW. This is an increase from 19.2 percent achieved over the same period of 2004.
See www.sepa.org.uk/nws/data/returns.htm

TARGETS FOR RECYCLING MAGAZINES

Defra has announced a voluntary agreement that will see publishers of magazines set recycling targets for magazines. The target will reach 70 percent of magazines to be recycled by the end of 2013 and also sees an agreement to increase the use of recycled materials within the magazines and their packaging while also raising readers' awareness of recycling. Similar agreements also exist for newspapers and ‘direct’ mail. See www.defra.gov.uk/news/2005/051117e.htm

ONLINE CHECKS FOR REGISTERED WASTE CARRIERS

The Environment Agency has added a facility to their web site to allow checks to be made on whether a waste carrier is appropriately registered. Searches can be carried out by postcode, town, company name or licence number. The duty to ensure waste only goes to a registered carrier has also been extended to householders as reported on the 4th November edition of news online See http://www2.environment-agency.gov.uk/epr/

WASTE FACILITIES AUDIT ASSOCIATION

The Waste Facilities Audit Association (WFAA) is an organisation that provides information on UK, Irish and mainland Europe waste management facilities through commissioning and sharing independent audits of sites.
