GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES REVIEW OF GREATER LONDON AUTHORITY POWERS

The ODPM  has issed a consultation setting out the Government’s options and proposals for granting additional powers and responsibilities to the Greater London Authority (GLA).  Proposed changes to the structure and responsibilities of waste management and planning include the Mayor’s proposal to establish a single waste authority for  London.

ROHS GUIDANCE

The DTI has now published its final version of the non-statutory guidance to accompany the Restriction of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (RoHS). The guide is intended to assist those placing electrical and electronic equipment on the UK market by helping them to understand the Regulations.

INITIAL REGULATORY SIMPLIFICATION PLAN

DEFRA has released plans to simplify regulations by identifying ways of cutting bureaucracy and inviting suggestions to streamline the Department's regulations. Amongst the suggestions for simplifying regulations is  the integration of the permitting regimes for Waste and Pollution and Prevention Control to reduce burdens on industry. The package of measures is expected to save businesses £86 million each year.

UK SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT INDICTAORS IN YOUR POCKET 2005

DEFRA has published its latest edition of Sustainable Development Indictors in your Pocket. The publication contains over 50 statistics covering environmental issues such as global atmosphere, air and water quality, noise pollution, along with waste and recycling. Each indicator has a “traffic light” assessment to ascertain whether recent progress has been made.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR JUNIOR VICE-PRESIDENT 2006/7

Corporate Members of the Institution are reminded that Nominations are due by the 31st December for the position Junior Vice-President of the Institution for 2006/7.

Candidates for the office of Junior Vice-President must be Fellows of the Institution. Nominations are required in writing, and must be proposed and seconded by any two General Councillors or Centre Councillors. The Nomination Form must be signed by the Nominee, and must be accompanied by a personal statement of not more than 250 words, giving some biographical information on the nominee, their career and achievements, and the contribution that they will bring to the Institution in the position of President.

A standard form of nomination can be obtained from the Professional Services Manager, Mark Gibson, at CIWM Headquarters, and nominations must be received by the Chief Executive at the Institution’s Headquarters by no later than 12.00 noon on Friday 30 December 2005.

MEMBERSHIP OF INSTITUTION COMMITTEES

There are still two vacancies on both the Audit Committee and the Investment Panel for Members of Fellows of the Institution that are not General Councillors. These important committees have an oversight of the Institution’s financial affairs, and these two positions are to help provide an independent voice on each committee.
