CONSULTATION ON CREATING A STREAMLINED ENVIRONMENTAL PERMITTING AND COMPLIANCE SYSTEM
Defra has issued a consultation paper considering streamlining and simplifying the mechanics of the permitting and compliance systems for waste and PPC without undermining environmental protection or human health.  Specific proposals include: changes to the way applications are made and determined; changes to the variation, transfer and surrender of permits; and changes to procedures for demonstrating the competence of operators.

PROTOCOL FOR VERIFICATION OF PLASTIC PACKAGING RECYCLING IN THE UK

has produced a protocol to improve the operation of the PRN/PERN system and to provide confidence in the claimed level of UK plastics packaging being recycled in the UK.

CONSULTATION ON DRAFT END OF LIFE VEHICLE REGULATIONS
The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government for the Republic of Ireland is consulting on draft ELV Regulations. The Regulations set out specific measures in relation to the collection, storage, treatment, dismantling, reuse and recycling of end-of-life vehicles.

USE OF LANDFILL LEACHATE TO SUPPLY NUTRIENTS FOR SHORT ROTATION COPPICE ADAS has undertaken a series of studies on the use of biomass crops (Miscanthus grass and Short Rotation Coppice) on landfill sites for leachate treatment.  Results show crop growth similar to that in agricultural soils with the plants using nutrients from the leachate, but not being affected by potentially harmful elements of the leachate.

NEW DIRECTIONS IN WASTE ~ NGG CONFERENCE

CIWM CYMRU WALES CENTRE - WEEE MEETING & SITE VISIT - 28TH MARCH 2006
Will take place at M Baker Recycling Ltd , St Helens, Merseyside. M Baker operate a fridge recycling plant 24hrs a day, seven days a week, processing on average 60 units per hour and have treated in excess of 1.5 million units to date.  They are also now fully licensed to accept all ten categories of WEEE, making them the first fully specific WEEE Plant in the UK with plans for another. VOLUNTARY TREASURERS ROLE - The CIWM North West Centre are looking for a volunteer to take over the Treasurers role for the Centre, from April this year.  The work would involve managing the Centre finances, producing regular reports for council meetings and HQ and attending Centre Council meetings - approximately 6 per year.  Estimated time involved is around 8 hours per month, although this does vary depending on events being held in the region.  Anyone interested should be a CIWM member and live in the NW region.  Please contact Sian Fisher - Centre Chair on 01772 731833 or sian@catalystwaste.co.uk
