PERMITTING REVIEW BRAINSTORMING SESSION
The CIWM waste regulation and hazardous waste groups will be holding a brainstorming session on the 28th March to discuss the consultation on the options for creating a streamlined environmental permitting and compliance system. CHEWING GUM LITTER CAMPAIGN
Defra's Chewing Gum Action Group (of which CIWM is a member) has announced funding for 15 Local Authorities across England to help them deal with chewing gum litter. In April the fine Local Authorities can give to those dropping gum will rise to 75 pounds under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005. The Chewing Gum Action Group has also produced a good practise guide for Councils on dealing with chewing gum litter.

FIXED PENALTY NOTICES FOR LITTER OFFENCES
Defra has revealed figures for the amount of fixed penalty notices issued for litter offences. On average Local Authorities in England issued 56 fixed penalty notices, 40 percent of these remain unpaid. See www.defra.gov.uk/news/2006/060227b.htm

RESOURCE EFFICIENCY KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER NETWORK
The Resource Efficiency Knowledge Transfer Network was launched on the 1st March at the Houses of Parliament.  The Resource Efficiency KTN (in alliance with NISP) will promote better use of material and energy resources by UK businesses to reduce waste and energy consumption.  The network has been set up to provide knowledge transfer services across all commercial and industrial activity.  For more information see www.resource-efficiency.org

MANAGEMENT OF LOW LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTE CONSULTATION
The UK Governments have issued a joint consultation on the long term management of low level radioactive wastes. Some low level radioactive wastes and very low radioactive wastes are currently disposed of in specified landfill sites and some incineration also takes place.

The Health and Safety Executive has issues a press release alerting the waste and recycling industry to its health and safety performance following 9 fatalities over 8 weeks.

NEW DIRECTIONS IN WASTE ~ NGG CONFERENCE

CIWM CYMRU WALES CENTRE - WEEE MEETING & SITE VISIT - 28TH MARCH 2006
Will take place at M Baker Recycling Ltd, St Helens, Merseyside. M Baker operate a fridge recycling plant 24hrs a day, seven days a week, processing on average 60 units per hour and have treated in excess of 1.5 million units to date.  They are also now fully licensed to accept all ten categories of WEEE, making them the first fully specific WEEE Plant in the UK with plans for another.
