MSW STATISTICS FOR ENGLAND – 2004/05 FIGURES

Defra has released provisional estimates of England’s MSW performance, the first set of figures produced through the WasteDataFlow tool. MSW arisings increased by 2.1 percent from the previous year, while the amount sent to landfill decreased both in tonnage terms and as a percentage of how MSW is managed. 67 percent of MSW is still going to landfill with around 9 percent incineration and recycling/composting increasing to around 23.5 percent.

BUDGET REPORT

This week’s budget confirmed the increase in landfill tax of 3 pounds per tonne for active wastes, raising the tax to 21 pounds per tonne as of April 1st, the lower rate remains unchanged as does the aggregates levy. BREW funding will be 95 million pounds for English businesses for 2006/07 while the landfill tax credit scheme will increase to 60 million pounds. The budget also reports 23 trades taking place of landfill allowances equal to 455,000 allowances traded for 9.6 million pounds. See  www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/media/20F/1D/bud06_ch7_161.pdf

REVIEW OF EU ANIMAL BY-PRODUCTS REGULATION 1774/2002

Commission review of EU regulation for animal by-products to look at removing disproportionate provisions and clarifying the scope, taking on board experiences since implementation 1 May 2003.  Main issues are very low risk products that should be excluded and possible duplication of other legislation.  UK options are put forward and comments sought.

HOUSE OF COMMONS’ REPORT INTO NORTHERN IRELAND WASTE STRATEGY

The Public Accounts Committee of the House of Commons has issued a report into Northern Ireland’s Waste Strategy and progress towards meeting the strategy. The report is critical of the strategy and local authority plans, under resourced regulatory teams and a failure to address infrastructure deficits.
