ESA HEALTH AND SAFETY STRATEGY

The Environmental Services Association has launched a health and safety for the waste management industry. The strategy will target 4 key areas of slips, trips and falls, manual handling, workplace transport and machinery safety with a view to reducing RIDDOR reportable accidents by 10 percent a year and eliminate fatalities. REPUBLIC OF IRELAND BIODEGRADABLE WASTE STRATEGY

The Department for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government for the Republic of Ireland has issued a National Strategy for managing biodegradable wastes. Around 1.82 million tonnes of biodegradable municipal solid waste will need to be diverted from landfill each year up to 2016 to meet landfill Directive requirements. EU APPROVAL FOR WRAP FUNDING

The EU Commission has approved under EU state aid rules the continued funding of WRAP's market development activities through to 2010. WRAP's new business plan will also see a move to a sector specific focus on construction, retail, manufacturing, organics, waste minimisation, behavioural change and local authority support. IRISH WEEE COLLECTION FIGURES

The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government for the Republic of Ireland has announced figures for the collection of WEEE. 14,587 tonnes have been collected over the first 7 months of their WEEE regime. This equates to 6.7kg of WEEE collected per person, in excess of the WEEE Directive target of 4kg per person by 2008.

MONITORING FEES FOR MINERALS AND LANDFILL SITES ~ WALES

A new fee regime is introduced under The Town and Country Planning (Fees for Applications and Deemed Applications) (Amendment No.2) (Wales) Regulations 2006 to allow local planning authorities to recover the costs of carrying out their monitoring function. The fee regime will be based on a charge per scheduled site visit to recover average costs including travel costs and will be set at 288 pounds per visit for active sites and 96 pounds per visit for inactive sites.
