OFFICE OF FAIR TRADING REPORT INTO MSW SECTOR
The Office of Fair Trading has issued a report looking into public procurement and competition in the municipal waste management sector. The report looks at how competition can be increased for municipal waste collections, where 52 percent of contracts (by weight) are currently held by direct service organisations, and in the municipal waste treatment sector.

INCREASE IN LOWEST TARGET FOR ENGLISH LOCAL AUTHORITIES
Following the consultation on options for Local Authority statutory performance targets for 2007/08 earlier in the year, Defra has decided to raise the lowest of the targets set for Local Authorities in England. Those Authorities who had been set an 18 percent recycling and composting target will now be expected to achieve a minimum of 20 percent for 2007/08. Further support will also be offered to the lower recycling Authorities.

ENVIRONMENT STRATEGY FOR WALES
The Welsh Assembly has launched an environmental strategy setting out the strategic vision for the environment in Wales for the next 20 years. The strategy’s main themes include tackling climate change, the sustainable use of resources and preventing pollution and environmental hazards. EU COMMITTEE OF REGIONS REPORT INTO LANDFILL DIRECTIVE
The EU Committee of the Regions has produced an outlook report on the implementation of the Landfill Directive at regional and local levels. The report highlights the significant efforts that have been made in implementation; the decrease in biodegradable waste going to landfill across the EU and the continued importance landfill will play in the management of non-recyclable and non-combustible wastes.
