NORTHERN IRELAND WASTE STREAM INFORMATION

The Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland has released a document containing information on a number of specific waste streams to support “The Towards Resource Management Strategy”. A brief summary of key issues, future actions and further information for MSW. C&I, C&D, Agricultural, hazardous, packaging, WEEE, ELV’s, tyres and battery wastes are provided. 5 MILLION MORE RECYCLING IN ENGLAND

A survey carried out by WRAP has reported that there are now 5 million more people recycling compared to 18 months ago when the “Recycle Now” campaign was launched. The survey found 57 percent of people in England were now classed as ‘committed’ recyclers, compared to 45 percent in September 2004. See www.wrap.org.uk/news/millions_more.html

OPERATIONAL WASTE MANAGEMENT FACILITIES

Defra has released a report containing details of all operational waste management facilities in England and Wales. The term co-disposal is still referred to for landfill sites as the classification of sites prior to full implementation of the Landfill Directive is provided.

DEFRA WIP EDUCATION & TRAINING PROGRAMME: ON-LINE SURVEY

Defra is undertaking a second annual on-line survey to support work on the development of materials for a new Masters module and two VRQs (in advanced waste management technologies and principles of sustainable waste management), as part of the New Technologies strand of the Waste Implementation Programme. This survey is continuing until 26th June. Respondents are asked for comments on the course subjects and their current levels of knowledge. One respondent drawn at random will win a magnum of champagne.

SCOTTISH OPRA SCORES

SEPA has published scores for Operator Performance Assessments and Pollution Hazard Appraisals (OPRA). OPRA scores are assigned to operators in a number of regulated industries including waste management facilities.

DEFRA DEPARTMENTAL REVIEW

Defra have released a review of the department. The review looks at progress made by the department and also looks at Defra’s vision for the future in promoting sustainable development and the key areas of work (including sustainable consumption and production) and their interaction with key partners such as the Environment Agency.
