UK ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION EXPENDITURE BY UK INDUSTRY

Defra has issued a report detailing environmental protection spending by UK industry. The report estimates 3.2 billion pounds spent on environmental protection representing 0.6 percent of the industries turnover. GUIDANCE ON WID – 3rd EDITION

Defra has issued a 3rd edition to their guidance on the Waste Incineration Directive. The guidance explains how the regulatory and technical requirements of WID should be interpreted.

NORTHERN IRELAND CONTROLS AGRICULTURAL AND MINING WASTE

Statutory Rule 2006 number 280, The Waste Management Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006 will bring Agricultural and Mining waste into the waste management controls. The new requirements will come into force on the 31st July 2006.

NORTHERN IRELAND CONTAMINATED LAND CONSULTATION

The Northern Ireland Department of the Environment has issued a consultation on introducing a contaminated land regime similar to that operational elsewhere in the UK. The regime would allow for identification and remediation of contaminated land sites.

WASTE PREVENTION DEMONSTRATOR PROGRAMME

The Environmental Protection Agency for the Republic of Ireland has launched a waste prevention and demonstration programme. 7 Local Authorities have received funding and will receive expert assistance in developing local waste prevention schemes. This will form a bank of knowledge that they will then share with Authorities throughout Ireland.

MANUAL FOR STREETS

A “manual for streets” publication is currently being developed by a number of government and non-governmental bodies to show how street design considerations can help improve local environmental quality. Waste issues are discussed within section 8 of the current draft version for which comments are being sought. See www.manualforstreets.org.uk/contribute.htm
