DEFRA MUNICIPAL WASTE STATISTICS
Defra have published their first estimates form their survey of municipal waste management. The survey shows a 3 percent reduction in the amount of MSW collected with 37.5 percent having some form of value recovered from it. 62 percent of MSW was disposed of to landfill in 2005/06. REPORT ON FIRST YEAR OF LATS
The Environment Agency has issued a report covering the first year of the Landfill Allowances and Trading Scheme (LATS), providing details of compliance. All 121 authorities in England met their targets for the amount of biodegradable municipal waste they were allowed to landfill in 2005/06/ See

JANUARY WASTE MANAGEMENT REPORT IN DAILY TELEGRAPH

RETAILERS URGED TO CUT PACKAGING AND FOOD WASTE
The Minister for Local Environment, WRAP and retailers have met to discuss progress on the Courthauld agreement. The agreement to aims to design out packaging waste growth by 2008, deliver reductions in packaging waste by 2010 and identify ways to tackle food wastes.

The J Sumner award is for Student and Graduate members under 30; the J C Dawes Bursary is available for full Members and Fellows over 30; the International Members Award helps fund international visitors to CIWM conference and exhibition; the PEEL Peoples Cup recognises team working on a licensed waste management facility; and for both members and non members, the award for Innovative Practice in Wastes Management and Resource Recovery.
