WEEE REGULATIONS
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2006 have been issued to implement the requirements of the WEEE Directive into UK law. The regulations place responsibility on producers of electrical equipment for financing the cost of collection, treatment, recovery and disposal of household WEEE taken to designated collection facilities.

ENGLISH LOCAL AUTHORITY RECYCLING RATES
Defra has released audited figures detailing English Local Authority household recycling and composting rates. The national recycling rate stands at 26.7 percent with 66 percent of Local Authorities meeting or exceeding their individually set targets.

NORTHERN IRELAND WASTE INFRASTRUCTURE TASK FORCE REPORT
The Northern Ireland infrastructure task force has compiled a report detailing steps needed to ensure infrastructure is developed to fulfil National and European targets. The report recommends the introduction of waste disposal authorities, improved liaisons between central and local government, a strategic waste board and the development of a business case to put to central government for funding to support the development of waste infrastructure.

EU REPORT ON IMPLEMENTATION OF PACKAGING WASTE DIRECTIVE
The EU has issued a report on the Packaging Waste Directive showing that the environmental objectives have been achieved. 66 million tonnes of packaging waste was generated in EU 15 countries in 2002 with 62 percent of this being recovered and 54 percent recycled. The report also notes some of the internal market objectives have not been fully achieved.

SUMMARY OF BREW FUNDING CONSULTATION RESPONSES
Defra has issued a summary of responses to their consultation looking at distribution of landfill tax money through their BREW programme. Responses show that funding to date has delivered business and environmental benefits and that the funding should move towards financing resource efficiency measures and be more strategically focussed.

WRAP FUNDING FOR FOOD WASTE REDUCTION
WRAP are calling for applications from the retail sector for funding to be used on innovative schemes to reduce food and packaging wastes.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND CENTRE REGIONAL STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT
CIWM is currently undergoing a strategy development process to ensure that the Institution is properly positioned over the coming years to best meet and serve the needs of its members. SOCIETY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
Members attention is drawn to the Society's Autumn Newsletter which has just been produced. Copies can be found on the CIWM website in the Society's pages, and on the SocEnv website at www.socenv.org.uk  Of particular interest to those Registered as Chartered Environmentalist are the items on "Accredited Expert Environmental Witnesses", the forum on the subject of renewable energy planned for 1st March 2007 in London, and the report on the recent workshop on Skills for Sustainability. The Society has just re-launched its own website in a more user-friendly format and this can be accessed at www.socenv.org.uk
