SCOTTISH WASTE DATA
SEPA has published their annual publication providing statistics on waste management in Scotland for the year 2004. Just over 19 million tonnes of controlled waste was generated in Scotland, 15 percent of this coming from households. The recycling and composting rate for Scotland in 2004/05 was 17.5 percent.

The Environment and Heritage Service for Northern Ireland have published an updated list of licensed waste management sites in Northern Ireland.

FOUR MILLION EUROS FOR IRISH AUTHORITIES
The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government for the Republic of Ireland has announced 4 million euros in funding for Local Authority operation of recycling facilities. REGULATORY IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR WEEE
The DTI has issued a final Regulatory Impact Assessment for the WEEE Regulations that came into force on 2 January 2007 (although the Regulations will not be fully enacted until July 2007).

ELV TAKE BACK KICK IN
The requirements for car manufacturers to provide a free take back system for end of life vehicles is now in force through the End of Life Vehicles (Producer Responsibility) Regulations 2005. See

HONOURS FOR WASTE MANAGERS
The CIWM would like to congratulate those working in waste management who featured in the New Year’s honours list. Offord Slater, formerly of the Environment Agency and active member of the CIWM received a MBE as did Recycling education officer at Cornwall county council, Richard Bower, and recycling centre attendant for Magherafelt district council in Northern Ireland, Irene Smyth.

DUTY OF CARE CONSULTATION SEMINARS
Defra are holding free to attend seminars looking at the proposals within the current consultation on Duty of Care and Waste Carrier/broker regimes. Defra are offering English waste carriers and brokers to attend a seminar on either 9th February in London or 14th February in Birmingham . Sessions for waste producers are also taking place on 2nd  in Northampton and 8th February in London. Those wishing to take part should contact flytipping@defra.gsi.gov.uk stating your name, company details and your activities. Places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.
