CIWM INVITES YOU TO TAKE PART IN IT’S HEALTH & SAFETY INITIATIVE
CIWM are pleased to announce that they have awarded the contract for the work on their H&S Initiative to Entec UK Ltd. CIWM (EB) shall be managing the project, with funding from Defra.

The scoping study will define the extent of the health and safety awareness and competence needed in the sector, establish what currently exists and identify the gaps and how they might be filled. NORTHERN IRELAND INTERIM GUIDENCE ON LANDFILL CLOSURE: CAPPING AND RESTORATION 
The Environmental and Heritage Service have released Interim Guidance on Landfill Closure: Capping and Restoration for EHS staff and operators. The procedures may be applied to both existing and new landfill sites. The guidance document sets out a brief overview of the main aspects to be considered when establishing the capping standards at landfill sites. DEFRA STAKEHOLDER EVENT ON PORTABLE BATTERIES
Defra have held their third stakeholder event on portable batteries, at the event two policy papers were presented. One was on battery treatment/processing and evidence of compliance (PP/07/03) and the second paper on a possible batteries system overview (PP/07/04).  Defra are now providing stakeholders with the opportunity to comment on these papers. NORTHERN IRELAND SURVEY ON COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL WASTE ARISING 2004/05
A survey has been published by the Environmental and Heritage Service on the Commercial and Industrial Waste Arising in 2004 to 2005 in Northern Ireland. Some of the key results include of the total waste produced it is estimated approximately 45% is from industry, Belfast City Council area produced the largest quantity of commercial and industrial waste, mixed Waste was determined to be the largest component of commercial and industrial waste. This year the highly regarded CIWM Professional Awards Ceremony has moved to JCB. This will be a wonderful FREE event showcasing the excellent work completed by CIWM members of all classes and ages, and a chance to hear what the 2007 winners have planned. JCB will be providing a site tour of their unique facilities in the morning which will be followed by a buffet lunch then conferral of the awards in the afternoon. NEW QUALITY ASSURANCE DOCUMENTS SET TYRE RECYCLING STANDARDS
Wrap have realised  two Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) documents, the BSI PAS 107: Specification for the manufacture and storage of size reduced tyre materials and BSI PAS 108: Specification for production of tyre bales for use in construction. These documents were created in conjunction with the British Standards Institute (BSI),  they provide guidance to the measures and procedures needed to produce recycled material to a consistent grade and quality. CIWM REPRESENTATIVES ON OTHER BODIES
The General Council of the Institution annually reviews the list of representatives nominated to other bodies.  While many representatives are able to continue to represent the Institution during the following 2007/8 year that is not to say that the opportunity for other members to volunteer is not welcomed. DEFRA: 2007 CRITICAL YEAR FOR THE ENVIRONEMNT
Environment Secretary David Miliband has highlighted environmental achievements and challenges for the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs in his Department’s Annual Report. Mr Miliband states that, 2007 is a critical year for the environment if they are to mobilise action among individuals, business and governments across the world. FLYCAPTURE ENFORCEMENT TRAINING PROGRAMME
The FlyCapture Training Programme is a national training programme developed by Defra, the Environment Agency and the Welsh Assembly Government designed for local authority enforcement staff and lawyers.
