DEFRA have launched the Waste Strategy for England 2007, the new strategy builds on Waste Strategy 2000 (WS2000) and the progress since then but aims for greater ambition by addressing the key challenges for the future through additional steps. DEFRA CONSULTATION ON INCENTIVES FOR HOUSEHOLD WASTE
Alongside the publication of the Waste Strategy for England 2007, Defra have launched a consultation on incentives for recycling by households. The consultation document seeks views on removing the ban on local authorities choosing to introduce a revenue-neutral scheme to financially incentivise householders to recycle and reduce waste, where this is desired locally. DCLG PLANNING FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE: WHITE PAPER
The Communities and Local Government (DCLG) have released a White Paper titled Planning for a Sustainable Future. The paper sets out detailed proposals for reform on how decisions are taken on nationally significant infrastructure projects - including energy, waste, waste-water and transport. ENERGY WHITE PAPER: MEETING THE ENERGY CHALLENGE
The DTI have launched the Energy White Paper 2007, the document sets out the international strategy which recognises that we need to tackle climate change and energy security together. It strengthens the support for renewable electricity and provides additional support to development of different technologies to recover energy through a variable scheme of electricity prices. TWO DTI CONSULTATIONS ISSUED ALONGSIDE THE ENERGY WHITE PAPER;
DTI have published a consultation document on nuclear power. This documents has been released so that a decision can be made whether it is in the public interest for companies to have nuclear power option available when making their investment decisions. DTI UK BIOMASS STRATEGY 2007
The UK biomass strategy has been published alongside the Energy White Paper as a supporting document. The purpose of this strategy is to define Government policy with the aim of achieving optimal carbon savings from biomass, while complying with EU policies and the Biomass Action Plan. The study examines key elements of biomass fuel chains covering collection or production and harvesting, preparation, storage, transport and conversion to useful energy supplies for various resources. DEFRA COMMUNICATIONS PLAN: EC DIRECTIVE ON BATTERIES AND ACCUMULATORS
Defra have developed a stakeholder communication plan which will be updated as the batteries Directive transposition phase progresses. The key objective is to use communications to ensure maximum awareness amongst producers and other stakeholders including consumers so as to raise portable battery collection and recycling performance and enable the UK to meet the Directive targets. DEFRA CONSULTATION ON CARBON EMISSIONS REDUCTION TARGET
Defra have lunched a consultation on carbon emissions reduction targets, it sets out the Government's proposals for the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) for April 2008 to March 2011. The Government proposes a CERT obligation at around double the level of activity of the current EEC 2005 to 2008, with a continuing focus on low-income consumers. WRAP REPORT MANAGING BIOWASTE FROM HOUSEHOLDS IN THE UK
WRAP have published a final report on Managing Biowastes from Households in the UK: Applying Life-cycle Thinking in the Framework of Cost-benefit Analysis. The key objective were to critically review the options for the management of municipal kitchen and garden waste from households in the UK through the application of life-cycle thinking within a cost-benefit analysis framework. ENVIRONMENT AGENCY WHAT IS A HAZARDOUS WASTE REPORT
The Environment Agency have published a document on what is a hazardous waste. The guide shows a “desk-based” approach to find out if waste is hazardous. LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND THE DRAFT CLIMATE CHANGE BILL WEB FORUM
The Joint Committee on the Draft Climate Change Bill will be hosting a web forum as part of its inquiry into the draft Climate Change Bill, from 23 May to 21 June. The Committee sees the forum as an opportunity to consult on the role of local government in the drive to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.
