SCOTTISH RECYCLING FIGURES
SEPA has issued the latest recycling figures for Scotland and revealed that for the period of June 2005 – June 2006 Scotland recycled or composted 25.3 percent of nearly 3.4 million tonnes of municipal solid waste generated in Scotland. See www.sepa.org.uk/news/releases/view.asp?id=556&y=2007
PROPOSED PERFORMANCE INDICATORS FOR WASTE
Defra has issued a consultation on performance indicators for local authorities for waste. The backbone of the new framework will be around 200 indicators covering all Government's priorities for local delivery. The proposed indicators include household waste not re-used, recycled or composted per head, percentage of household waste re-used, recycled and composted and the percentage of MSW landfilled. WASTE FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE AGREEMENT
The European Council of the European Union has reached an agreement on revisions to the Waste Framework Directive, the legislation that other laws are built upon. The proposal has taken into account many of the amendments made following its first reading in the European Parliament and must again go back to the Parliament before the Directive can be agreed upon. HILARY BENN SETS OUT VISION FOR LOCAL AUTHORITIES ON THE ENVIRONMENT

MARKETS FOR RECYCLABLE MATERIALS RECOVERED BY SCOTTISH LOCAL AUTHORITIES
Remade Scotland have issued a report looking at markets for local authority collected materials. Although local authorities are being driven by legislation, rather than demand for materials, there appears to be outlets available for all recyclate potentially recoverable from Scottish local authorities.
