SCOTTISH WASTE DATA DIGEST
SEPA have published their annual digest of waste data on controlled waste in Scotland, providing 2005/06 data. 22.22 million tonnes of controlled waste arose in 2005/06, although data for mines and quarrying waste was not available for the period. Almost half of this was made up of construction and demolition waste while 440,000 tonnes of special waste arose during the period, a 17 percent reduction on the previous year. SOILS FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE
Defra, the Scottish Executive and the Welsh Assembly Government have issued a consultation on the EU Soils Framework Directive. The proposed Directive lays down a framework for the protection and sustainable use of soil based on the principles of integration of soil issues into other policies, preservation of soil functions within the context of sustainable use, prevention of threats to soil and mitigation of their effects, as well as restoration of degraded soils.

CONSULTATION RESPONSE SUMMARIES
Defra have published summaries of responses received to 2 consultation papers issued earlier this year. NEW TECHNOLOGIES CATALOGUE
Defra have updated their catalogue of applications for their new technologies programme. The catalogue examines the technologies that received funding from the new technologies demonstrator programme while also providing information on with some of those projects who were not successful in obtaining funding through the programme. LITTER EDUCATION IN REPUBLIC OF IRELAND
The Department of the Environment Heritage and Local Government for the Republic of Ireland have announced funding for Local Authority litter education campaigns.
