NORTHERN IRELAND MUNICIPAL WASTE DATA
The Environment and Heritage Service for Northern Ireland have published a report detailing arisings and management of municipal waste, their first set of data provided through the Waste DataFlow system. Just over 1 million tonnes of municipal wastes were generated with 23 percent of this going for recycling. All district councils in Northern Ireland met their requirements for biodegradable waste diversion. See www.ehsni.gov.uk/munwastemanreport05-06.pdf

DRAFT STRATEGY FOR SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION
A joint government and construction industry initiative is being consulted upon by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform with a view to improving the sustainability of construction. The strategy includes targets for waste to reduce waste to landfill by 50 percent of 2005 levels by 2012, by 2015, zero net waste at construction site level and by 2020 zero waste to landfill. GUIDANCE ON HAZARDOUS WEEE
The Environment and Heritage Service for Northern Ireland have issued guidance aimed at helping in the assessment of potentially hazardous WEEE and how it should be classified under the European Waste Catalogue. See www.ehsni.gov.uk/hazguide_ni_01_weee-2.pdf

LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY SURVEY
The first part of a survey assessing the quality of the local environment across England is published today. The survey gives detailed information on the performance of 174 local authority areas on the management of key street-level environmental problems including litter, fly tipping, fly-posting and graffiti. Results for the remaining 179 English local authority areas will be published next year. The local level survey builds on the existing national survey, which is carried out for Defra annually by ENCAMS. See www.encams.org/leqreports/

WASTE STRATEGY BOARD MEMBERS
Following the publication of the Waste Strategy for England 2007 the Waste Strategy Board has been established with responsibility for driving delivery of the strategy. The Board is to have two non-executive members and Defra are now in the process of appointing the members.
