DEFRA REPORT REDUCING THE RELIANCE ON LANDFILL IN ENGLAND
The House of Commons Committee of Public Accounts have released a report on DEFRA's progress in reducing the amount of biodegradable waste that goes to landfill and increasing the amount of recycled waste. DEFRA SURVEY OF PUBLIC ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIOURS TOWARD THE ENVIRONMENT
Defra have released a report which illustrates the results from the 2007 Survey of Attitudes and Behaviours in relation to the Environment. The report aims to gives a representative picture of what people in England think, and how they behave, across a range of issues relevant to the environment including reducing waste, reusing and recycling. ENVIRONMENT AGENCY REPORT ON THE LATS 2006/7
The Environment Agency has issued a report which covers the second year of the Landfill Allowances and Trading Scheme (LATS) in England. The report summarises local authority compliance with the scheme, provides a regional summary of the current position and a forward look. ENVIRONMENT AGENCY CLASSIFICATION AND CODING OF WASTES FROM TREATMENT FACILITIES
The treatment of hazardous waste forms an integral part of the activities of the waste management industry. It is vital that the outputs from treatment processes dealing with hazardous wastes are classified properly so that they can be dealt with in the right way. DRAFT STRATEGY FOR THE FUTURE OF THE BREW PROGRAMME
Defra have released a draft strategy for the future of the Business Resource Efficiency and Waste (BREW) Programme. The strategy aims at further improving businesses efficient use of resources and highlights criteria for the granting on funding. The Programme is funded through landfill taxes. ENVIRONMENT AGENCY OPPORTUNITY TO HELP SHAPE EPP APPLICATION FORMS
Under the Environmental Permitting Regulations the Environment Agency will be introducing a new application form which will cover current waste management licensing and Pollution Prevention Control (PPC) activities. The Environment Agency wishes to test the application form and are looking for individuals to test the draft application form and guidance which supports it.
The Agency estimates that one hours preparation will be required. LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF WASTE AND RESOURCES WORKSHOP
CIWM are proposing to hold a low cost workshop in Northampton on the 19 November which will provide participants with an insight into Life Cycle Assessment. The workshop will involve some brief presentation, followed by an opportunity for each delegate to practically experience the use of the Environment Agency’s WRATE software. Case studies of previous use of the software tool will also be demonstrated to highlight the capabilities of life cycle assessment. THE GREAT WASTE SURVEY
The CIWM journal has launched the Great Waste Survey 2007 to find out what you think of the hottest topics of the last year. This series of simple questions will give us the chance to assess what CIWM readers really think about alternate weekly collections, the success (or otherwise) of the UK's waste strategies and the industry's progress as regards health and safety. Corporate Members of the Institution are reminded that Nominations are due by the 31st December for the position Junior Vice-President of the Institution for 2008/9. Candidates for the office of Junior Vice-President must be Fellows of the Institution. Nominations are required in writing, and must be proposed and seconded by any two General Councillors or Centre Councillors. The Nomination Form must be signed by the Nominee, and must be accompanied by a personal statement of not more than 250 words, giving some biographical information on the nominee, their career and achievements, and the contribution that they will bring to the Institution in the position of President.
A standard form of nomination can be obtained from the Professional Services Manager, Mark Gibson, at CIWM Headquarters, and nominations must be received by the Chief Executive at the Institution’s Headquarters by no later than 12.00 noon on 31st December 2007.
