DEFRA MUNICIPAL WASTE MANAGEMENT STATISTICS 2006/07
The first set of estimates from Defra’s 2006/7 survey of municipal waste have been published. The results are based on information supplied by local authorities in England to WasteDataFlow. The figures for financial year 2006/7 show an increase in total municipal waste, a further increase in recycling, and a decrease in the amount sent to landfill, leaving England with a recycling and composting rate of 31 percent. DEFRA THE ENVIRONMENT IN YOUR POCKET 2007
Defra have published the eleventh edition of The Environment in your Pocket booklet. It is an annual booklet which makes readily accessible environmental trends and statistics on climate change, air quality, water quality, land use, waste and recycling, wildlife and other environmental issues. The 2007 booklet includes a section presenting some of the results from the Defra Survey of Public Attitudes and Behaviours toward the Environment 2007. EPA NATIONAL HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN 2008-2012 CONSULTATION
The Environmental Protection Agency for the Republic of Ireland has published a consultation on a Proposed National Hazardous Waste Management Plan for 2008-2012. The consultation suggests that the first National Hazardous Waste Management Plan, published in 2001, will be replaced by the proposed plan with priorities to reduce the generation of hazardous wastes; reduce unreported hazardous waste production; to strive for increased self sufficiency and reduction in export and to minimise impacts of hazardous waste where produced. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN THE EUROPEAN FOOD & DRINK INDUSTRIES REPORT
The Confederation of Food and drink Industries of the EU (CIAA) has published a report on Environmental Sustainability in the European Food & Drink Industries. The publication highlights issues, industry actions and future strategies in the areas of raw materials, resource efficiency, waste, energy, water, packaging, transportation and distribution efficiency. SEPA ACHIEVE EU IPPC DIRECTIVE TARGET

DEPARTMENT FOR TRANSPORT: RENEWABLE FUELS AGENCY
The Department for Transport has established a new Renewable Fuels Agency. The new Agency will be responsible for the day to day running of the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation which comes into force in April next year. LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF WASTE AND RESOURCES WORKSHOP
It is your last chance to book a place on the CIWM Life Cycle Assessment workshop. The low cost workshop will be held in Northampton on the 19 November, it will provide participants with an insight into Life Cycle Assessment. The workshop will involve some brief presentation, followed by an opportunity for each delegate to practically experience the use of the Environment Agency’s WRATE software. Case studies of previous use of the software tool will also be demonstrated to highlight the capabilities of life cycle assessment. THE GREAT WASTE SURVEY
The CIWM journal has launched the Great Waste Survey 2007 to find out what you think of the hottest topics of the last year. This series of simple questions will give us the chance to assess what CIWM readers really think about alternate weekly collections, the success (or otherwise) of the UK's waste strategies and the industry's progress as regards health and safety. The survey gives you the chance to comment on certain subjects and is entirely anonymous, so feel free to let us know your honest opinions. The results will be reported in December's issue of CIWM. Corporate Members of the Institution are reminded that Nominations are due by the 31st December for the position Junior Vice-President of the Institution for 2008/9. Candidates for the office of Junior Vice-President must be Fellows of the Institution. Nominations are required in writing, and must be proposed and seconded by any two General Councillors or Centre Councillors. The Nomination Form must be signed by the Nominee, and must be accompanied by a personal statement of not more than 250 words, giving some biographical information on the nominee, their career and achievements, and the contribution that they will bring to the Institution in the position of President.
A standard form of nomination can be obtained from the Professional Services Manager, Mark Gibson, at CIWM Headquarters, and nominations must be received by the Chief Executive at the Institution’s Headquarters by no later than 12.00 noon on 31st December 2007.
