ZERO WASTE FOR SCOTLAND
The Environment Secretary for Scotland has announced ambitious new plans for
waste management in Scotland. New targets of 60 percent recycling by 2020 and 70 percent by 2025 have been proposed, no more than 25 percent of waste is to be used
to generate energy, while municipal waste being sent to landfill is to be reduced to 5 percent by 2025.

HSE GUIDANCE ON COLLECTION AND PROCESSING
The Health and Safety Executive has issued guidance on the collection and processing
of household waste and recyclables. The guidance considers the range of existing and possible future collection and treatment systems and assesses the level of occupational risk associated with each of the systems. See www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrhtm/rr609.htm

EUROPEAN WASTE GENERATION AND PACKAGING INDICATORS
The European Environment Agency has released data on municipal waste generation and packaging waste. Was generation rates throughout Europe have stabilised, while

NORTHERN IRELAND LOCAL AUTHORITY PERFORMANCE
The Environment and Heritage Service for Northern Ireland has issued a report on
their Landfill Allowance Scheme, summarising district councils compliance with the scheme. All 26 districts achieved met landfill allowance obligations. BETTER WASTE REGULATION IN SCOTLAND
The Scottish Executive and SEPA have released a report detailing responses received
to their joint consultation on better waste regulation. The consultation aimed to seek views on the current regulatory regime for waste and how and where it could be improved.

AUDIT COMMISSION GUIDANCE FOR BVPI FOR 2007/08
Guidance for the collection of the statutory best value performance indicators has
been released by the Audit Commission. The updated guidance incorporates further clarification and corrections made to the previous version which was published in

FUNDING FOR LEQ IN WALES
The Welsh Assembly is to issue 2 million pounds in funding for projects to tackle litter, dog fouling, graffitti and other local environmental quality issues. BIOSTABILISATION AND LANDFILL TAX REPORT
A report is calling for a reduction in the rate of the landfill tax for biostabilised waste sent to landfill. The increases in landfill tax are seen as acting as a barrier to the development of MBT within the UK while the report also highlights the lower environmental externalities associated with the landfilling of biostabilised waste.
