Rallying call from the new CIWM President

Opening the 2008 CIWM Conference, newly invested CIWM President Hugh Hoather delivered a rallying call to the resources and wastes management sector today, urging it to approach the future in a “new, bold and creative way”.

“I want this conference to explore how this Institution and its members can do just that and become part of the solution by making a world of difference to the management of resources and waste – so that future generations can build on the legacy and thrive and grow in a clean and safe environment.”

Mr Hoather went on to outline the scale of the task, highlighting infrastructure and planning as key issues, as well as the increasing budgetary pressures faced by local authorities and the challenge of positively engaging consumers. The industry also has to embrace the wider climate change agenda and respond to the global market pressures that shape the UK’s ability to turn waste materials back into useful commodities.

Succeeding Jeff Cooper as President of the CIWM, Hugh brings a wealth of experience to the Institution, having been involved in wastes management in both the public and private sector for over 30 years. His career included eight years as County Waste Disposal Officer for Cheshire County Council and a further seven years in the role of Managing Director for 3C Waste, one of the UK’s biggest LAWDCs (Local Authority Waste Disposal Company). From 1998, he remained in the private sector as a director of his own waste management company.

“With partnership working being one of the key priorities for our industry as we move forward, Hugh’s broad experience and his understanding of both the operational and strategic challenges will be invaluable. He also brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the role, and a strong sense of responsibility towards the CIWM and its members,” says CIWM Chief Executive Steve Lee.

“One of my priorities for the year ahead is to help the Institution to strengthen its position as the leading professional body for wastes and resource management, both nationally and internationally,” adds Hugh. “I will also be working to ensure that the CIWM keeps pace with developments in the industry and delivers services that help professionals in the sector to stay at the forefront in terms of their skills and knowledge.”

Copies of the 2008 Presidential Address will be available from mid-morning Tuesday at the CIWM Press Office in Torbay Park.
